Twin Cities: Multiple rounds of light snow this week with a cold surge to end the week
Beginning early Monday morning and continuing through Thursday, the Twin Cities region has a chance of seeing multiple rounds of light snow over the coming days, followed by a big cold surge to end the week. Over the next 36 hours, a trough will remain parked over the region that will be reinforced by multiple shortwaves over the coming days that will continue to promote an ongoing snow threat over the coming days.
The latest model guidance shows sufficient moisture and a little stronger lift than previously thought. This has increased the snow total forecast for the region and will likely bring significant travel impacts across the Twin Cities Metro with the first widespread snowfall event for the Metro. This is especially true following the travel headache that occurred Friday evening following the light wintry accumulations that surprised the metro and resulted in several wrecks across the region.
The latest model guidance has 1-3” of snow across the Metro by Monday evening, with snow totals of 3-5” forecast through Wednesday evening. Some light snow is still possible through early Thursday morning, so some light accumulations could still be possible through then.
To close out the week, a strong cold front will work across the Midwest to bring fridge temperatures to the Twin Cities Metro to end the week and into the weekend. The latest forecast has highs in the upper teens to low 20s Thursday into Friday, with lows in the single digits to low teens. The coldest temperatures look to come late this weekend into early next week, with low temperatures early Sunday and Monday ranging around 0-5 F [pictured below]. Some low-lying areas outside the immediate Metro could even become sub-zero. Factor in the winds, and we will have wind chills across parts of the Metro as low as -20 to -25 F for a brief period to close out the weekend into the early next week.
