Dangerous Heat and Severe Storms Possible Today in The Twin Cities

TWIN CITIES - The dog days of summer are upon us in Minnesota, and today they could really bark. Much of the Twin Cities Metro is in an Excessive Heat Warning today from Noon until 8 PM. An Excessive Heat Warning means that the heat and humidity will significantly increase the potential for heat-related illnesses, particularly for those working or participating in outdoor activities. Today is a good day to drink plenty of water, avoid the outdoors if you can, and not leave pets or children in vehicles.

Another threat for the Twin Cities today is the possibility of severe storms. Overnight the Storm Prediction Center upgraded the risk for severe weather to a Slight Risk (2 out of 5) for much of southern/eastern Minnesota which includes the Twin Cities metro. The Twin Cities Metro is outlined in a “hatched” area for both hail and wind, which means there is an increased chance of significant damaging wind gusts greater than 65 mph and very large hail, 2 inches in diameter or greater. While there is still some uncertainty between the various Hi-Res weather models on exact storm tracks and how this afternoon and evening will evolve, it is a good day to stay weather aware and has multiple ways to receive severe weather alerts today. The greatest threat time looks to be around or after the 6 PM timeframe for the Twin Cities metro area into the early morning hours on Friday.
