Filing Opens for Burnsville, Minnesota Mayor and City Council Positions May 21st

BURNSVILLE, MINNESOTA – As the city of Burnsville prepares for its upcoming municipal elections, the City Clerk's Office announced that candidates who want to run for the Burnsville City Council may file their affidavits for candidacy starting Tuesday, May 21, 2024. Filing will be open until Tuesday, June 4, 2024, at 5 p.m. The process takes place at Burnsville City Hall, located at 100 Civic Center Parkway.

Interested candidates must meet certain eligibility criteria, including being eligible to vote in Minnesota, being at least 21 years old at the time of assuming office, residing in their districts in the city of Burnsville for at least 30 days before the General Election, completing and filing an Affidavit of Candidacy form in the Office of the City Clerk, and adhering to campaign finance reporting regulations. A filing fee of $20 will be assessed upon submission of the affidavit.

Candidates filing for local races with the City of Burnsville will receive a packet of information containing materials regarding campaigning, signage, a precinct map, and information on where additional materials may be obtained. This packet will be reviewed with the candidates at the time of filing. It's important to note that affidavits will not be accepted on Monday, May 27, due to city offices being closed in observance of Memorial Day.

The Burnsville City Council includes the Mayor and four Council Members, all elected by and from the city's electors at large. The terms for these positions are four years, with the terms staggered so that only two Council Members are elected every two years. Municipal elections in Burnsville are non-partisan, meaning candidate names are placed on the ballot without party designation.

In the event that the number of candidates exceeds a certain threshold, a municipal primary election will be held on August 13, 2024. This primary is triggered when the number of candidates is one more than twice the number of positions to be filled. The positions of Mayor and two Council Members are on the November General Election ballot.
