Minneapolis Man Charged For a String of Thefts From Home Depot Worth Over $6,000

APPLE VALLEY, MINNESOTA - The Dakota County Attorney's Office released a summons to appear for 28-year-old Mitchell Omodt for the theft of $6,329.34 worth of merchandise from several Home Depot stores across the in and around the Twin Cities on 23 separate occasions.

According to the criminal complaint, on September 22, 2023, a corporate investigator for Home Depot contacted the Burnsville Police Department to inform them of numerous thefts that occurred at several Home Depot stores between August 12, 2023, and September 12, 2023. The corporate investigator told the Burnsville Police Department that Mr. Omodt would take high-value items to a self-checkout and pretend to swipe a credit card or a credit card that was canceled and then leave the store without paying for the merchandise. The corporate investigator additionally provided video surveillance of each theft to police.

This scheme reportedly worked on seven separate occasions in Minnesota. On August 12, 2023, Mr. Omodt stole $1,186.37 of merchandise from a Home Depot in Waite Park and $811.94 from a Home Depot in Monticello. On August 31, 2023, Mr. Omodt stole $823.41 from the Inver Grove Heights Home Depot. Then, in September, Mr. Omodt stole merchandise worth $1,164.88 from the Baxter Home Depot on the 5th, $1,042.88 from the Apple Valley Home Depot on the 8th, $1,027.28 from the Richfield Home Depot on the 10th, and $272.93 from the Inver Grove Heights Home Depot on the 12th. The total loss for Home Depot was $6,329.34, with three of these thefts reportedly occurring in Dakota County.

On September 25, 2023, the criminal complaint states investigators contacted Mr. Omodt by phone, and Mr. Omodt admitted to the police that he committed these thefts from Home Depot to continue to support his drug addiction. Mr. Omodt estimated he stole from Home Depot on about 10-15 different occasions and sold or gave away the stolen goods to other people "because everyone needs them."

Per the criminal complaint, Mitchell Omodt is being charged with Felony Theft (Aggregating) (Over $5,000), which comes with a 0-10-year sentence and/or a fine of $6,000 to $20,000. The mugshot below is from the Anoka County Jail from an arrest on September 14, 2023.
